The inmu is unique

It combines music, tactile elements, and movement in a soft interactive cushion that stimulates multiple senses. With the inmu we wanted to create a high quality tool that gives peace of mind through its beautiful design and sophisticated sensor technology. An ideal tool for sensory stimulation and music therapy.

The name inmu stands for ‘interactive music’.

Simplicity

Just touch the inmu and the music will start. Put it aside and it will stop again after a short while. No confusing buttons, remote controls, or apps are needed.

We wanted to create an electronic tool that enables you to play enchanting music without any prior experience. An inclusive tool that weak and cognitively challenged people can use without any difficulties.

Design

The award-winning design is made to fit anyone’s hands or body. Small tactile elements were made to be explored, and the pocket or elastic belt that also makes it easy to handle the inmu.

Made for every day use

The inmu is made of high quality material and can withstand being dropped on the floor or even being stepped on.

Hygienic

The cover can easily be removed and washed. The inmu core is water repellant and both core and cover can be wiped with a disinfectant tissue.

Long-lasting battery

The inmu is always ready to interact with you. The rechargeable battery inside the inmu lasts 2-3 weeks at normal use before a recharge is needed.

Music that follows your movements

The music universe is unique. Its the first sensory stimulation tool to use interactive music. It is composed as you hold the inmu in your hands. Through advanced software and sensor technology, a computer inside the inmu transforms your touch and movements into stimulating music.

Vibrations to feel the music

Soft vibrations stimulate your body and make you feel comfortable. The vibrations follow the music, your touch and movements.

Stimulation of our senses is essential for our wellbeing

Our senses are essential for us; to feel alive, when meeting with others and to show and receive deep emotions.

But our senses need to be stimulated. Stimulating one sense awakens more senses. For example, when you listen to music you want to move. Your brain helps you: if you are missing one sense your brain will compensate and make your other senses more active. For example, blind people often have particularly sensitive hearing.

Actually our body is being stimulated via the senses all the time; often you just have to trigger a single ‘spot’, for example, a stroke on the hand or the smell of a flower, and you will open up for new experiences.

The brain – and the nervous system

Being stimulated through the senses has a powerful influence on the brain and the nervous system.

The brain, as the ‘head office’, benefits from experiences of change. For example when you caress the hand the brain experiences this as a new ‘connection’, but if you continue to caress the hand in the exact same way (which is not possible – there will always be small changes), the brain will get ‘lazy’. On the other hand, the nervous system will benefit from the continued caressing of the hand and will send calming messages to the brain. So through the senses you can choose to stimulate in many ways.

Music has an especially eminent effect on our brain. The small changes in the inmu music universe make our brain curious and can stimulate it to develop new connections – and it keeps us interested.

The most important sense is the sense of touch

This is why we put a lot of effort into creating the tactile elements of the inmu. The tactile elements and the vibrations from the inmu stimulate your hands and body – and the pocket of the inmuRELAX gives you a feeling of safety when you put your hand in it.

Over- and understimulation

The fact that our body is constantly being stimulated through the senses makes it very important for us to be aware of how and through which ‘channels’ or senses we are receiving sensory stimulation. Not only colours, sounds, and smells etc. have an influence on us, but also the room itself, architecture, furniture, lighting etc., as well as other people in the room.

For people with an illness, especially a brain disorder, it is important to consider their current mood and state of mind.
Did you know that wandering and agitated behaviour is often caused by patients being either understimulated or overstimulated?

High and low arousal

The inmu offers you the possibility of regulating the stimulation of the senses as well as the arousal level.
For example when you touch the inmuRELAX softly, it will play soft and quiet music. If you swing it, you will hear a sounding and fascinating ‘stardust’ sound. If you make quick movements you will bring more musical elements in from the ‘orchestra’.

As music changes our mood the relaxing music coming from the inmuRELAX will make you calm down and feel comfortable. The ‘dancing’ music from inmuDANCE will make you move; you have to smile, perhaps you’re even inspired to sing a song…

Makes you fall asleep

If you lie down while listening to the inmuRELAX, your chances of having a good and relaxing night’s sleep are great… And the music will stop automatically when you fall asleep and no longer move the inmu.

Being in control

With the inmu even weak and confused people can control how much stimulation they want. If they feel uncomfortable because of the music, the vibrations, or the fabric they can just put the inmu aside and the music will stop automatically.

Cognitive challenges

Cognitive challenges are often associated with great sensory impressions. Too many impressions in one go can be difficult to handle. This is particularly the case in situations where you don’t feel comfortable, such as in care situations. The inmu can help both the care receiver and the care giver by being a safe companion, something to distract you from the feeling of pain, for example, as well as stimulating the senses that are needed in the situation.

The ability to sense yourself can be a challenge; especially if you have an illness. Through the inmu music universe, the tactile elements, and something to hold in your hands the inmu can help you to calm down, keep track of your thoughts, centre you, and give you peace of mind.

The inmu is a multi sensory stimulation tool – also as therapy

The inmu’s handy shape and mobility make it a unique tool for therapy. You can use it anywhere you need to and in any situation where it is required.

The combination of mobility, tactile stimulation, vibration and music that responds to movement makes the inmu a sensory tool, where only the imagination sets the limits.

See this video on why sensory stimulation is essential for us and why the inmu is such a unique sensory tool.

The inmu is the first sensory stimulation tool in the world to use interactive music – music that is medicine for the brain.

Interactive music is music that you can control. The music is created by a computer inside the inmu. The computer uses advanced artificial intelligence (AI) software that composes the music while you hold the inmu. The music changes when you touch, stroke or move the inmu.

“The music is always changing – yet always the same”

Asger Steenholdt is the composer of the music for inmuRELAX. Actually Asger uses the title “music architect” as the actual music played by the inmu is composed by the advanced software algorithms in the inmu itself when the user touches or moves the inmu. In this video Asger explains about how the music for the inmu was made and why it is so special.

Facts about the inmu music

Designed for the inmu

The inmu music universe is composed especially for the inmu. It is based on experience gained through extensive testing performed at care centres.

The music is infinite

As the music is composed by software inside the inmu it continues as long as you use it, only stopping when you put it aside.

It never loops

The inmu music universe never repeats itself. Like a brook that is always the same and always changing, the music is constant – yet never the same. The ever-changing music has an eminent effect on our brain. The small changes in the music universe make our brain curious and can stimulate it to make new connections – it keeps us interested.

This is why the inmu music never gets annoying in the way you might experience with normal pre-recorded music.

You don’t have to upload music

The inmu comes in different models with different types of music.

For all models apply that, the music is created as you touch or move the inmu. You don’t have to upload or stream music to the inmu.

Patented technology

The technology is based on advanced technology that is patent pending.

You are in control

The music only plays if you touch or move the inmu. When you pick up the inmu or touch it the music starts. When you put it aside or fall asleep it stops automatically.

Having music in your hands

The inmu lets you feel the music when you hold it, hug it or just stroke it. This has an immense effect on the brain and nervous system. The slight changes in the music universe caused by your movements increase the effect.

You can feel the music

When you hold the inmu you can feel the music in your hands and body. Soft vibrations stimulate the body and therefore deaf and blind people can also benefit greatly from the inmu.

The music reflects your movements

As you move and touch the inmu you will experience that the music interacts with you. You can stroke it gently, tap it, squeeze it, swing it, throw-and-grab it, or touch the tactile elements.

“Music is one of the most importants tools in the toolbox”

The danish author and expert in neuropedagogy, Peter Thybo, explains how our brain is affected by music and why music is medicine for the brain. Thybo has written numerous books about neuroscience and neuropedagogical methods.

.

Music as medicine

Music is a direct path to our soul and mind. Music changes our mood. It can make us happy, make us smile, make us calm or make us thoughtful.

Research has shown that music has a unique ability to stimulate the brain and even heal an injured brain.

Made to move

We are all made to move. If you stop using your muscles for a short while (for example during illness), you will lose not only the ability to move, but also the muscles themselves (muscle mass). To ‘use’ a muscle does not require training as a bodybuilder. A simple breathing exercise or moving the hand up and down reduces muscle tension and stimulates blood circulation, increases our awareness of our body (I am here), and stimulates the brain.

Consciousness and concentration

To feel ‘conscious’ is one of the most important feelings for human beings. This feeling differs from one person to another, but it almost always has something to do with the feeling of ‘being here’ – my physical body, my thoughts, that I can use my senses, the fact that I feel something …

Body movements are a superb way to train or develop our consciousness, together with concentration, meditation, or mindfulness-based practices. The body movement can be a breath or a simple movement with an arm. The important thing is that you do it as consciously as you can: I bend my arm – I stretch my arm, and so on.

The inmu can be a helpful tool in telling you that you are bending your arm. Put your hand in the pocket of the inmuRELAX or under the elastic belt of the inmuDANCE. The music tells you that you are making a movement, the vibrations tell you where to focus, and the weight of the inmu gives you the possibility of using it as a training device (today it is not as heavy as yesterday).

Sleep

Sleep has a powerful influence on your wellbeing and mood, not least on your brain. Indeed, insomnia and irregular sleep can make the brain ‘shrink’. This affects cognitive processes like concentration, memory, learning, your ability to plan, and also the way you experience pain and handle stressful situations and other challenges.

inmuRELAX offers you the possibility of lying down with something nice and soft in your hands and a music universe that you can control yourself. When you fall asleep inmuRELAX will sleep as well and if you wake up in the middle of the night, you just have to touch or cuddle it, and it will help you go back to sleep. There are no buttons to push or cables to mess around with.

Wellbeing

The ability to move is of great importance for the feeling of wellbeing. Especially if you have an illness that causes inability to move one or more limbs.

Wellbeing means feelings like confidence, security and independence: I can do this myself! With wellbeing comes easy breathing, reduced pain, the feeling of warmth in the body, a feeling of lightness in the head – and success.

The inmu – a mobile therapeutic tool

The inmu’s handy shape and mobility make it a unique tool for therapy. You can use it anywhere you need it and in situations where it is required – only the imagination sets the limits.

The main element to the inmu is music. When you touch it or move it, you will experience that the music interacts with you. You can stroke it gently, tap it, squeeze it, swing it, throw-and-grab it – the music will gently change with your movements. Similarly the vibrations will change with the music. The tactile elements are few but carefully chosen to stimulate the senses.

inmuRELAX and inmuDANCE are different in terms of music styles, the way they interact, fabric, and tactile elements. We cannot tell you which one to choose. It depends on the person/patient, the therapeutic work and goal, and the situation.

As a therapist you can use the music, the vibrations, the tactile elements, the response to movement, the mobility, and the handy shape or either the pocket (inmuRELAX) or the elastic belt (inmuDANCE) in your own way.

Activation and communication

The fact that music plays when you touch it makes the inmu an interesting activationtool. The music makes you want to listen: What will come next? What will happen when I squeeze it? Will the music change when I swing it?

People suffering from cognitive disorders, especially dementia, often experience difficulties when socialising. With the inmu on the table or at your side on the sofa you will have a beautiful and dignified tool that is easy to communicate about. A touch (the music starts) is enough to make your neighbour smile, exchange a quick glance, perhaps even some words, and free hidden emotions. The easy handling combined with the music and the tactile elements make the inmu a brilliant tool for nonverbal communication.

Learning and developing

What you learn as a child forms the basis on which you build for the rest of your life.

Learning does not only happen through the brain and what we understand intellectually. The body plays a large role in all sorts of aspects of learning and development. It is fascinating how even small experiences and memories (the body remembers as well as the brain) can be brought to the surface when they are needed.

In a situation of a damage on the body on in the brain, only a small stimulation is needed to initiate a relearning/rehabilitation process. The brain will start to make new connections that send messages to among others the nervous system, and a healing process will begin.

Robust

The inmu was made to be used. It is made of robust materials and can absorb moderate shocks like being dropped on the floor or thrown.

The core of the inmu is water repellent. Both core and cover can be wiped with a disinfectant tissue.

The brain

The brain is an extremely complex organ. It reflects and organises all the information received from outside (among others, visual, tactile, and auditory inputs) and from inside (among others, hormones that ‘reward’ both brain and body with feelings such as frustration or comfort). The brain does not remain in a constant state. Throughout the entire human lifespan, the ways in which the human brain and body are used are constantly developing. The body and the brain are one large, coherent system. So the higher the fitness of your body and brain the more easily you will be able to tackle a process when it needs healing.

Rehabilitation

Even small damage to the brain can cause a domino effect in the body that can give you physical problems for the rest of your life. If the brain is to build up new connections in order to have the ability to work together with the body, it has to have this impulse on a daily basis. It is hard work to get the brain, nervous system and muscles to relearn how to work together. The best results are achieved when training is done on a daily basis and in gradual steps, progressively adding new movements/muscles. The training has to reach a level of stability in order to give the brain and body more possibilities to make new connections in the brain.

Cognitive rehabilitation

Damage to the brain is almost always followed by cognitive problems. In rehabilitation recovery depends on finding a ‘way into’ the brain. We are all born with a set of ‘intelligence’ and pre-comprehension that makes us able to learn on different levels. Moving the body can be of great help, because it opens up the senses. Not only the touch of the skin, but also when the limbs are moving the whole body and the brain is working and experiencing, and new connections are being built. Awareness of one’s surroundings; the colours, the tactile elements, the sounds, the lighting, etc., as well as other people in the room have an enormous impact on cognitive rehabilitation.

Several studies have shown that music can heal an injured brain. It may sound strange, but it is because music and rhythm are deeply rooted in us. Just think about how we can show our emotions through music.

The brain is an extremely complex organ that reflects and organises all the information it gets through our entire life. The brain has the ability to use music to build new connections in the brain—also if it has been damaged, and it does this in cooperation with the rest of the body. This is why music is not only nice sounds, but also communication between the brain and the body (movements), and communication between the person and the surroundings (for example emotions).

Listening to music stimulates the brain positively—music that you perform yourself, and thereby using your body as well, involves more parts of the brain and builds more connections—but music that you perform yourself together with others, builds a lot more connections in the brain!

As long as people have existed, there has existed music.

We knew from the very beginning of the inmu development process that design should be an integrated part of the product. For most products design is something you add at the end. For the inmu shape, music universe, tactile elements and functionality form the whole experience. All made with user experiences in mind.

With the inmu we wanted to create a beautiful object that you just have to hold in your hands. Something you want to reach out for. And when you get it in your hands you experience the stimulating details, vibrations and the music.

Designer Emilie Wiehe explains about the ideas and considerations while designing the inmuRELAX.
