A study by Pflegepraxiszentrum (PPZ) Nürnberg show big effect from inmuRELAX in care: more calm and peaceful patients and reduced sleep problems.

Positive effect

Nursing home NürnbergStift

The study showed that inmuRELAX had positive effect in 85% of cases where it was used. The effect was more calm and peaceful residents.

The staff was also asked to evaluate the inmu. They concluded that inmuRELAX is a good tool for everyday care and to ease challenging situations. Especially when the inmu is used regularly.

Nursing home DIAKONEO

Saw positiv effect in 65% of cases where inmuRELAX was used. All residents had dementia and more than one behavioral challenge. The observed positiv effects includes that residents was calmed down, improved feeling of safety, relaxation or fell asleep.

Background for the study

The goal with the project was to test

  •  if patients would accept the inmuRELAX
  • if restless patients would be more calm when using an inmuRELAX
  • if patients would fall asleep easier and sleep all night.

For the staff the goal was to test if the inmuRELAX used regularly would ease everyday situations or make nursing interventions and challenging situations easier.

The study was carried out over a period of 6 weeks at two nursing homes (NürnbergStift and DIAKONEO). 8 people pariciapated from NürnbergStift and 14 from DIAKONEO. Staff had got a short online training before start of the study.

The project was carried out in cooperation with research institute IDC of the SRH – Wilhelm Löhe University and the research institute IREM of the University of Würzburg-Schweinfurt.

“Can I take the cushion home with me?”

“We need to talk to Mr. X’s family, he would definitely benefit from the cushion!”

“Finally a product that is easy to use!”

“The cushion makes participating residents calmer, we see the effect within a very short time!”

“Most of the residents react immediately to the RELAX, only with one participant did we need several attempts, but the third time he took the cushion himself.”

“The cushion is a real asset, wish we could keep it.”

“The podiatrist was with an anxious resident last week. The resident used to twitch her feet or try to pull them away, but she was calm with the cushion and her attention was on the cushion. The podiatrist found it much easier to care for her feet and the risk of injury was considerably lower.”

“I used the cushion on my night shifts or during rest periods. Before residents often got up again and again, but with the cushion were really relaxed.”

Our experience is that inmuRELAX makes a difference at the moment, but that it also helps to create security and has an effect that can last all day. Our staff has expressed that inmuRELAX is “a help in everyday life that does not demand, but gives”.

Liselott Löfgren is area manager for Ansvar & Omsorg AB in Norrköping

Background for the study

The study was carried out over a period of 20 weeks, and method development, data collection and review were carried out externally. A total of 13 people participated; all were in a palliative phase. The evaluation is based on the behavioral and mental symptoms that can occur with dementia – abbreviated BPSD – such as anxiety, restlessness and aggression. Staff have estimated the user’s response to inmuRELAX according to the BPSD scale used in the healthcare field, but have also answered open-ended questions.

The inmuRELAX calms, eases daily care and provides greater autonomy and wellbeing for people with dementia. That is the conclusion of a pilot project conducted on the use of the inmu in the professional care of people with dementia. 2/3 of the patients was reported to achieve a better quality of life during the study period.

Positive development

In two out of three people with dementia, the study showed positive results from using the inmu as part of daily care routines. It is an effect that, according to the participating care facilities, was expected to increase, had the project been allowed to continue for a longer period.

50 participants

The pilot project is based on data collected from 50 people with dementia living at eleven different Danish care facilities in ten municipalities over a period of four weeks.

That makes the pilot project one of the most comprehensive studies of the correlation between musical stimulation and dementia. It is notoriously difficult to conduct this kind of empirical study on the effectiveness of care tools on people with dementia, because the disease affects and progresses uniquely from person to person.

Goals

The main goal of the pilot project was to “investigate the basis and necessity for developing new tools and methods that are simple to implement into preventive nursing and social pedagogical care practices for people with dementia.”

Moreover, the pilot project investigated how easy the inmu was to implement into existing social pedagogical care methods, such as the “common third” and the “contact island”. “Common third” is a method that uses an object of interest to strengthen social interaction between two or more people who have trouble relating to each other.

Many people with dementia quickly get overstimulated by physical touch. “Contact Island” is the term for a daily recurring contact-promoting activity between resident (patient) and staff. It can also be an object that can be used as a “safe thing”, for example in daily care. When the “contact island” or the thing is being used, the person knows what is going to happen, e.g. dressing or undressing.

Music and dementia

The pilot project is a continuation of research gathered by Danish and international studies on the beneficial relationship between music and dementia.

One of the leading researchers on the effect of music on the brain is professor in musical therapy at Aalborg University, Denmark, Hanne Mette Ochsner Ridder. In her book Musik og Demens (2005), she describes the relationship between music and the brain:

“Music reduces agitated behaviour, anxiety, apathy, and depression, as well as raising cognitive and social skills and willingness to cooperate and share with others, when used in interdisciplinary contexts in relation to care situations or other forms of musical activities or treatments using musical therapy.”

Recommendations

The pilot project recommends that the inmu should be implemented over a longer period of time. During this period the care professionals should be personally involved in introducing the inmu into the specific daily care routines of the person with dementia.

Results

  • Showed that 2/3 of participants achieved a better quality of life.
  • Improves general wellbeing for people with dementia
  • Eases daily care routines for people with dementia
  • Minimises limitations in autonomy for people with dementia during daily care routines
  • Minimises unrest and reduces the use of sedatives for people with dementia
  • Improves night sleep and reduces the use of sleeping medication for people with dementia
  • Decreases agitation, violence and threats of violence made against care professionals

“The inmu improves the feeling of safety, promotes liveliness, prevents fatigue during mealtimes, gives rest and ease, prevents conflicts during daily toilet visits, personal hygiene, dressing and undressing, eases transfer by patient lift, minimises the amount of repeated emergency calls, and improves night sleep. In the long term it can help to decrease the use of sleeping and sedative medication.”

STUDY: 9 out of 10 psychiatric patients benefit from inmuRELAX https://inmutouch.com/study-9-out-of-10-psychiatric-patients-experience-improved-wellbeing-with-inmurelax/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=study-9-out-of-10-psychiatric-patients-experience-improved-wellbeing-with-inmurelax https://inmutouch.com/study-9-out-of-10-psychiatric-patients-experience-improved-wellbeing-with-inmurelax/#respond Mon, 01 Apr 2019 06:33:16 +0000 https://inmutouch.com/?post_type=project&p=7964

The inmuRELAX has proven to be a valuable tool for many psychiatric patients. It helps to reduce unease and excessive thoughts. Sleeping problems are common in psychiatric patients. Having a good night’s sleep is essential for coping with the next day’s challenges and may reduce symptoms. The calming and relaxing music and vibration from the inmuRELAX is an efficient tool to improve sleep.

Music is used in a wide range of ways to relax, calm down and change mood. An inmuRELAX is a safe and soft object to hold and it promotes the feeling of safety combined with relaxing music that you can control yourself. You can put it away when you don’t like it anymore and the music stops. The tactile details and the soft vibrations make you feel your body.

inmuRELAX is used in psychiatric hospitals. It can be part of the Safewards method (see http://www.safewards.net) as a calm down tool. The inmuRELAX is also used by patients in their own homes to improve sleep and reduce unease. Check out some of the case stories at the bottom of the page.

About the study

A study in a psychiatric facility found that wellbeing improved with the inmuRELAX in 9 out of 10 patients. It was used as part of the Safewards method that is implemented in psychiatric hospitals.

The inmuRELAX was used for hospitalised patients with different diagnoses, including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, Asperger’s syndrome and psychosis; all these patients were suffering from anxiety, mental turmoil and unrest. The imnuRELAX was used as a means to reduce anxiety and calm the patients. The test was performed during a 9-month period on 4 different wards in 2 different hospitals in Denmark (Psykiatrisk Center København and Psykiatrisk Center Nordsjælland).

14 patients participated in the project and 10 patients adequately answered all questions after the test was completed. The patients were 25 to 75 years old.

Results

Most of the patients (9 out of 10), covering all the diagnoses, felt that they had positive results from using the inmuRELAX during their hospitalisation. The reported effects included:

  • Reduced anxiety and unrest
  • Reduced mental turmoil
  • Reduced excessive thoughts
  • Improved sleep

Half the patients reported that inmuRELAX had removed their symptoms.

9 out of 10 would like to use the inmuRELAX again next time they are hospitalised.

Because of the positive results of the pilot test the inmuRELAX is now a permanent part of “The
Sensory Box” (a collection of tools for sensory stimulation offered to patients) at the wards.
