inmu for the sensitive conversation

When having a conversation about a sensitive topic or with someone who is anxious, struggling with their emotions or going through a difficult time in their life, it’s important to create a safe space.

Imagine creating a space with pleasant music that flows for as long as the person needs it. Imagine gentle vibrations that, like a cat’s purr, spread through the body. Imagine that the person can sit with something soft that can be gently stroked. Imagine an object that your fingers can caress, providing warmth and comfort. That’s exactly what inmuRELAX can do.

When you sit with inmuRELAX close to you, you can feel your body. This makes it easier to centre yourself and concentrate on the difficult things you need to talk about. inmuRELAX creates a space that shuts out noise. The music spreads throughout the room and creates a nice, calm atmosphere in the room. You can feel your body and centre your thoughts. Many have experienced how emotions are opened up when you get in touch with your body. Feelings you may not have allowed yourself to connect with before.

There are many ways an inmu can support and help during a conversation. As an introduction to the conversation, the inmuRELAX can help you calm and centre your thoughts. This can be difficult when you’re anxious, unsafe or deeply upset. The nervous and sensory systems can be overloaded and it can be difficult to just breathe. The inmu’s music and vibrations make it easier to breathe calmly and deeply.

Breathing exercise

  • Place the inmuRELAX on your flat hands in front of your body, arms bent
  • Breathe in
  • As you exhale, tilt the inmu up towards your chest
Gradually slow down the breathing rhythm

Once you’ve started the conversation with the support of inmuRELAX, the inmu becomes a safe base – also for the next conversation. During the conversation, you can sit with the inmu close to your body. This gives you something to fiddle and cuddle with. It can therefore be a good idea to have the inmu close by so that it is easy to pick up and put down again.

Sometimes you need to be able to physically feel that someone else is taking care of you, guiding you along the way. The inmu as an object, with the music and vibrations as extra support, can be this physical link; the neutral common third party.

Communication exercise
This exercise is easiest to do standing up. You can have your eyes open or closed.

  • Hold the inmuRELAX between you. Both of you are holding with both hands
  • Move the inmuRELAX slowly up and down. You, as the therapist, are leading the movement
  • Listen to the music
  • Pay attention to the breathing; does it change over time?

In the difficult conversation, you may approach something that is particularly difficult to talk about and you may need to stop for a moment. You can then focus on the inmuRELAX’s soothing vibrations or the music. It provides a pleasant breathing space. Psychological and mental tension often builds up in the muscles, leading to many other types of tension that can be experienced as physical pain, among other things. Movement and stretching of muscles and joints gets the blood circulation going and brings fresh oxygen to the brain, which helps to calm the body and mind.

Pause exercise

  • Hold inmuRELAX with both hands
  • Sit forward on the chair so you can spread your legs slightly
  • Stretch your arms up over your head
  • Swing the inmu in a wide arc down to the floor
  • Swing the inmu up over your head again

It’s nice to finish with a relaxation exercise that centres the body and calms the breath and nervous system.

Relaxation exercise

  • Have the person sit comfortably, preferably with their eyes closed
  • Swing the inmuRELAX around the person; over the head, around the body, one side, the other side, in front and behind and finally in front of the body

When you have finished the conversation, you may want to allow the person to sit alone with the inmuRELAX for a while. This gives them a chance to centre themselves, perhaps clear up some of the thoughts and feelings that the conversation has brought up. And it provides a calm transition and preparation for getting back to everyday life outside the counselling room.

Nanna Geertsen suffers from a schizoaffective disorder, and hallucinations are a daily part of her life.

“It only takes a single night of bad sleep for everything to fall apart for me. The mood swings start and the hallucinations come. It goes so very fast.”

Nanna describes schizoaffective disorder as having schizophrenia and bipolar disorder at the same time. The disorder is chronic, and is characterised by people experiencing a combination of symptoms associated with schizophrenia and mood disorders. These include hallucinations, states of delusion, mania and depression.

Her condition means that she has previously been hospitalised for short and long periods of time. Getting the inmu though has changed that.

“Normally I would have been hospitalised—but that was before I got the inmu. When my hands are shaking, and I’m sitting with the inmu, it almost feels like they are cancelling each other out.”

Nanna uses the inmu to find peace and calm when her mind goes off on a tangent.

“When I was in the hospital, it was a problem that my feelings were all over the place. It’s almost like if you take a ball with all of your feelings inside and shake it.”

After getting the inmuRELAX though, she has experienced a marked improvement, as it helps her to better control her feelings.

“The inmu helped centre my feelings. It made me feel more level. And it made me feel like I’m myself again. It was an amazing feeling. It was just amazing. Sometimes using the inmu has made me cry with joy, because suddenly I’ve been able to feel myself again.”

The inmu has also helped Nanna in other ways. Because using the inmu is enough for her to find rest and fall asleep, she has been able to cut down on her sleeping and sedative medication.

“After I got the inmu, I haven’t taken Truxal to relax in the evening. And I’ve also stopped taking Zolpidem to help me fall asleep.”

Truxal is a sedative antipsychotic. Zolpidem is short-term sleeping medication used in severe cases of insomnia.

Easing dental anxiety with relaxing interactive music https://inmutouch.com/inmu-at-the-dentist/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=inmu-at-the-dentist https://inmutouch.com/inmu-at-the-dentist/#respond Sun, 05 May 2019 13:36:19 +0000 https://inmutouch.com/?post_type=project&p=7109

It is estimated that about half the population feels anxious about going to the dentist (dental anxiety or dental fear). Skipping the dentist can lead to bad oral health, which in turn can affect the entire immune system.

Using inmuRELAX can help calm and distract patients, and it provides dentist and dental hygienists with a calmer working environment.

Dental anxiety in numbers

According to a 2015 study from Dental Research Journal as many as 59% of people have anxieties about going to the dentist, and 5–10% suffer from dental phobia (also known as odontophobia).

Dental anxiety and dental phobia make people averse to going to the dentist, and often make people skip dental appointments and regular check-ups. In severe cases people may even refrain completely from going to the dentist, even if they are in need of treatment, because their fear is greater than the dental discomfort they experience.

Prevailing health issues

While feeling nervous or ill at ease about going to the dentist, people who suffer from dental phobia may experience anxiety attacks, and dental fear is recognised as a phobia.

Dental anxiety often manifests itself as a fear of feeling pain or discomfort in the mouth, or a fear of the unknown—of not knowing or not being in control of what happens in your mouth. The most common triggers for dental anxiety are the sound of the drill and the needles used for general anaesthesia.

Not going to the dentist regularly can lead to bad dental health and problems like tooth decay and plaque build-up. Good dental hygiene is more important than just having good-looking teeth. Tooth decay can lead to infection that can put a strain on the entire immune system and problems in the jaw and sinus area.

What inmuRELAX does to help

By producing gentle vibrations and calming music, inmuRELAX can help soothe dental anxiety. It creates a calming atmosphere, and gives the patient something else to focus on.

Anxieties are never rational, and it is often the smallest things that can be the greatest source of anxiety, such as the sound of the drill, the sight of a needle lying on a tray or the smell of the dental clinic. Even just hearing the dentist talk using technical terms to describe one’s teeth during an examination can seem frightening.

It’s the anticipation of pain and of discomfort that is unnerving, the fear of the unknown—not necessarily the examination or treatment itself. Lying in the dentist chair can make you feel like you are powerless, and the feeling of not being in control can be a major trigger for anxiety.

inmuRELAX can help give the patient some of that feeling of control back by providing a comfortable distraction. Once in a while the patient has to interact with inmuRELAX by pressing or stroking it in order to keep the vibrations and the music playing. That gives the patient an easy task to focus on. inmuRELAX has a soft cover, and details such as the golden wave that runs around it, which can keep the fingers distracted.

The gentle vibrations help you calm down, and this makes it easier for the patient to drift away.

For dentists and dental hygienists, using inmuRELAX can make their work easier, because they don’t need to spend as much time talking to the patient to keep the patient distracted.

With inmuRELAX you not only have a beautiful soft cushion to hold and keep your hands busy, but you also have the relaxing and calming music and soft vibrations. With your hand in the pocket you feel safe and can more easily get away into your own world while the dentist is doing his or her job.

“Usually I’ll fill the time before the anaesthesia starts working by idle chat. But with inmuRELAX that hasn’t been necessary. It makes the patient lie completely still while they just feel the vibrations and listen to the music.”

Nina Rune

Dental hygienist, Tandplejen Skolebakken, Grenaa, Denmark

Why inmuRELAX helps

  • Helps reduce dental anxiety by an unique combination of tactile stimulation, relaxing music and vibrations.
  • Is simple to use. Turns on and off automatically.
  • Provides a distraction, and gives the patient something else to focus on.
  • Gentle vibrations help you relax.
  • Helps to stop the patient tensing up during treatment.
  • Gives the patient something to hug and cuddle during treatment.
  • The pocket makes it easy to hold and gives comfort.
  • Is easy to clean. The cover is machine washable at 60˚C, and extra covers are purchasable.
  • Is robust and can handle being used as a professional instrument.
  • Has a long-lasting battery lifespan.

“Good planning is everything”

Dental hygienist Nina Rune has twelve years’ experience giving dental treatments to kids and teenagers with dental anxiety.

“The most important thing when working with people with dental anxiety, is to take everything one step at a time. To remain calm and not stray from what you’ve planned beforehand. Good planning is everything,” Nina Rune explains.

Nina uses the inmu to calm and to distract her patients while she examines them.

“They feel like they can relax”

“At the clinic we specialise in treating kids and teenagers with dental anxiety. Basically, we have collected the patients here that have anxieties or special needs—diagnosed and undiagnosed. They come here, and they feel like they can relax.”

“One of my patients is a 17-year-old boy. When he comes to the clinic, he’ll stand around for a bit in the waiting room. He just has to get used to the situation and go through the procedures with us before we begin. He’ll tell me that he’s ready, and we can begin the treatment.”

Going through the individual steps of the treatment and making the patient comfortable with the procedure and the instruments used during the treatment is important in making the patient as comfortable as possible before the treatment begins.

In some cases, she and her colleagues will even let a patient come in at a time when there is no one else in the clinic.

“It can feel embarrassing to be afraid to go to the dentist”

“For some of the boys it can feel embarrassing to be afraid to go to the dentist, and they don’t want their friends to know that they feel nervous about coming here.”

She also visits people’s own homes. For many people with dental anxiety simply being in the dental clinic can feel frightening.

“Sometimes we’ll do home visits too before patients come to the clinic, to reassure them about what is going to happen during the procedure.”

“Everything gets easier when you are calm”

And often Nina Rune will start out slow. First by simply having the patient lie down in the dentist chair. Then by making a simple, non-invasive examination of the patient’s teeth. Slowly, and by taking everything one step at a time, she makes the patient accustomed to the situation and the environment, and when he or she feels like they are ready to move on to the next step, Nina will continue the treatment.

Often even simple procedures can be triggering for someone with dental anxiety.

“The last time he was here, we were making a mould for a nightguard for him, because he has been grinding his teeth. That’s something he has never tried before. And he wasn’t too happy about it. He had been worried about the procedure for several days when he came here.”

“I told him about the inmuRELAX, and told him that I thought it would help him. And it really did. It helped him calm down, and everything gets easier when you are calm. He was very excited about using the inmuRELAX. It made a huge difference. The inmuRELAX really saved him.”

“The inmu really saved him”

Through using inmuRELAX she has found that the inmuRELAX can help calm and provide a distraction during the procedure.

“I’ll give them the inmuRELAX when they are lying in the chair. Then I’ll use a disinfectant wipe to clean their hands. I’ll put the inmuRELAX on their stomach and guide their hand into the pocket.”

Instead of focusing on the look of the dentist’s instruments and on what is going on inside their mouth, they can instead focus their attention on the inmuRELAX; on the soft material, on the music, and on the gentle vibrations that it produces.

After I tried the inmu at the dentist, I felt much more relaxed and safe. It removed my attention on what the dentist was doing.

Patient

i

Studies

  • A study conducted at three dental clinics showed that 85% of the patients (mostly children) felt less pain when using inmuRELAX. 79% felt that inmuRELAX provided a comfortable distraction, and that they paid less attention to what the dentist was doing.
  • Dentists who have used inmuRELAX report a noticeable improvement on their working environment after introducing inmuRELAX. It has made it easier to calm down patients, made it easier to treat patients with dental anxiety or dental phobia, and has allowed them to relax more during treatments.

inmuRELAX makes a huge differencen every time we use it in our daily work. It makes the child relax – and the parents too.  We use it in a lot of different situation. It also makes us relax – the whole treatment room comes in a state of calmness.

Dental hygienist

N

Tips

  • Disinfect the patient’s hands before using inmuRELAX.
  • Put inmuRELAX onto the patient’s chest or stomach to get the full use of the gentle vibrations and music.
  • Guide the patient’s hand into the inmuRELAX’s pocket to make it easier to hold.
  • inmuRELAX can be held with one hand or both hands.
  • Show the tactile elements of inmuRELAX, and guide the patient to run their fingers along the golden wave along the inmuRELAX’s curve to provide a distraction.
  • Tell the patient to focus on keeping inmuRELAX playing during treatment to serve as a distraction.
  • Raise inmuRELAX into a vertical position, if the patient has trouble hearing the music.
  • Ask the patient to move inmuRELAX around during treatment, as this helps loosen up the muscles, and helps them from tensing up.

inmuRELAX makes the patient feel like they are holding someone’s hand, and it calms them down enough for me to be able to complete the treatment.”

Several studies have shown that music can heal an injured brain. It may sound strange, but it is because music and rhythm are deeply rooted in us. Just think about how we can show our emotions through music.

The brain is an extremely complex organ that reflects and organises all the information it gets through our entire life. The brain has the ability to use music to build new connections in the brain—also if it has been damaged, and it does this in cooperation with the rest of the body. This is why music is not only nice sounds, but also communication between the brain and the body (movements), and communication between the person and the surroundings (for example emotions).

Listening to music stimulates the brain positively—music that you perform yourself, and thereby using your body as well, involves more parts of the brain and builds more connections—but music that you perform yourself together with others, builds a lot more connections in the brain!

As long as people have existed, there has existed music.

Dentist Mariane Sørensen uses the inmu to make going to the dentist a better and calmer experience for people with special needs.

She and her colleague, dental hygienist Jeanette Tøttrup, have been using the inmu for three months, after Randers Public Dental Care
bought three inmus to use in their clinic in Randers.

“I can hear that my voice changes when I use the inmu. It gets lower, because it has this calming effect,” Mariane says.

“When I use the inmu on a new patient, I sit them down in the chair, and tell them that we’ve got a new tool that I want them to try out.”

They both work at a section of the clinic that specialises in helping people with special needs. The response they have received from their patients has been very positive. Especially because of its calming effect.

Easier treatment

The more time Mariane can spend focusing on the treatment and on the patient’s mouth, the quicker and easier it is for her to finish the treatment. This is especially important when treating people with special needs.

“The inmu gives me more time to work on a patient with their mouth open. Because it can help the patient feel calmer and more relaxed when lying in the chair, it makes it easier for me to treat them.”

The responses that she has received from her patients have been very positive.

Robust tool

Working with patients who have special needs can prove challenging, since no patient is the same as another, and everyone needs specialised treatment. This extends to every part of the treatment, from the dental care to the social approaches and the tools used. Effective treatment is individual, and while an approach might work well on one patient, it might not work on another.

“The people that I treat are not always able to say what they like and what they don’t like. Sometimes their way of saying no to something that annoys them is to push it away. And the inmu has also once in a while been kicked or thrown on the floor when I’ve used it. But that hasn’t done anything to damage it. It’s proven quite resilient,” Mariane says.

Facts

Randers Public Dental Care in the Danish municipality of Randers. The clinic treats a broad span of patients, from children to older people.

Specialtandplejen is a specialised section under Randers Public Dental Care. They are dedicated to treating patients with special needs, such as chronic illness, autism, anxiety, ADHD, dementia and brain damage. The clinic treats all age groups and patients who for one reason or another need special care and attention.

The inmu gives me more time to work on a patient with their mouth open.

Mariane Sørensen

Dentist

Children

Among Mariane’s patients are children with physical and mental disabilities.

“I’ve used the inmu on some of the children to comfort them and make them feel at ease with the situation. Sitting in the dentist chair can make you feel very defenceless, and the inmu can help them feel safer. Using it feels like putting on a comfort blanket.”

Her colleague, Jeanette Tøttrup, has also tried using the inmu on children.

“We test everything that we bring into the clinic on ourselves first before we use it on our patients. So, I took one of the inmu’s home with me. It happened by coincidence to be one of the days where I was looking after my grandchildren. I gave it to them to fall asleep with when they took their nap. The oldest is at that age when they have too much energy to sleep. But they both slept very well.”

Autism

Mariane Sørensen uses the inmu to relax and calm her patients during treatments.

Creating a relaxed atmosphere is especially important when working with people with autism, who are easily overstimulated by sensory stimuli such as sound, smell and touch. This makes them easily stressed by the daily noises in a dental clinic.

“It can be something as small as the noise of the suction or someone talking outside in the hallway. I lay the inmu on their chest, and make them put their hand inside the inmu’s pocket. It makes them feel like they are holding someone’s hand, and it calms them down enough for me to be able to complete the treatment,” Mariane says.

Dementia

“One of my patients is a woman with dementia. Sometimes she can be very restless and agitated. She can be difficult to treat if you catch her in the wrong mood. I don’t know if it was because of the inmu, or just because we caught her on a good day, but I gave the inmu to her, and I managed to finish her treatment without any problems,” Mariane says.
